Positive oral care and dental hygiene habits are the key to a better smile. Vital Smiles GA aims to provide excellent oral healthcare to children and families. We believe dental care should include life-long oral hygiene habits. Our offices in Albany and Norcross, Georgia, teach kids the importance of caring for their teeth, so they can have the best smile possible. Below, our dental team has compiled a list of top tips for a better smile.

  • Start early with dental checkups

Good oral hygiene habits begin at a young age. The pediatric dentists at Vital Smiles GA recommend starting dental appointments as soon as a child’s first tooth comes in. Bad dental hygiene habits are hard to break, so it is best to start learning dental care at a young age.

  • Brush teeth 2-3 times per day

For maximum teeth cleaning, brush 2-3 times per day, at a 45 degree angle towards the gums. This helps clean all those hard-to-reach spots and keeps the whole tooth looking its best. Always use a toothbrush with soft bristles to avoid being too harsh with your teeth and gums.

  • Rinse mouth after eating

Doctors at Vital Smiles GA recommend rinsing your mouth after every meal or snack. Don’t let the bacteria from food stay in the mouth and decay your teeth. The less time for bacteria to decay your teeth, the healthier your teeth will be.

  • Nutritious diet

Nutritious foods and a balanced diet can keep teeth and gums healthier. Our pediatric dentists recommend restricting sugar and soda consumption to avoid tooth decay and prevent enamel breakdown.

  • Flossing

Daily flossing is an important component of a healthy and beautiful smile. Flossing removes tartar stuck between the teeth, and strengthens gums to keep them looking pink and healthy.

  • Protect your teeth

If you participate in activities that could cause sudden impact to your teeth, Albany dentists recommend that patients always wear a mouth guard. Protective mouth gear can prevent chipped or broken teeth and decrease emergency visits to the dentist.

Smiles are directly affected by the amount of care put into keeping teeth healthy. Ensure good oral hygiene with regularly scheduled check-ups and dental appointments at your Albany or Norcross, GA dentist. To learn more tips for a better smile, visit the family and pediatric dentists at Vital Smiles GA. Schedule a dental appointment in Albany or Norcross online or via phone.

With its second digital launch this year, the Affordable Healthcare Act website, HealthCare.gov, is online and ready to connect 800,000 Americans a day with affordable insurance.  December 3, 2013 President Barack Obama spoke to the nation about the improved webpage at a White House healthcare event. After a difficult October 1 launch, the site is now reported to be accessible 90 percent of the time for individuals and small business owners to browse and enroll in insurance plans.

Affordable dental care and affordable health care are difficult to find without insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare. The Affordable Healthcare Act website is supposed to help Americans find the health and dental insurance plans which are right for their families. Now that HealthCare.gov is functional, online, and ready to accommodate high volume internet traffic, more people will be able to explore their options and decide if Obamacare is the right choice.

The president wanted to remind the American public that minor bugs and roadblocks are common with any undertaking, especially one as large and complex as the Affordable Healthcare Act website. While some small glitches might still pop up on the site, he expects developers and IT professionals to fix them in the upcoming months. His main priority is improving American access to affordable health insurance and affordable dental insurance.

It is our goal at Vital Smiles Georgia to provide high quality and affordable dental care in our Norcross and Albany locations. We accept patients of all income levels with a variety of dental insurance plans. If you think you might qualify for government assisted family dental insurance visit our resource page or browse HealthCare.gov. Contact Vital Smiles Georgia now to schedule an appointment.

For kids, Halloween is a chance to dress up, stay up a little past bedtime, and enjoy sugary treats. As a parent, you can help make this exciting holiday safe and healthy for your child. Check out some of these simple tips for keeping your children safe on the scariest night of the year!

Halloween Health and Safety Tips

  • Make sure that your child’s costume is bright and reflective. If the costume isn’t made from a bright material, use reflective tape to ensure that drivers can see your child.
  • Avoid masks that block your child’s eyesight, and opt for face paint or decorative hats or wigs instead.
  • Ensure that both you and your child have a flashlight with fresh batteries.
  • Check your children’s candy and treats for signs of tampering before they dig in. In the case of small children, take the time to check for choking hazards as well.
  • Ensure that costume accessories like swords and knives are dull and flexible.

Oral Health and Halloween

Despite this holiday’s bad dental reputation, Halloween is a great time to teach your kids more about the importance of oral health. Here are some great ways to help you child maintain a healthy smile all year long.

Avoid Candy Deprivation

Imagine—you’re eight years old, and you’ve just brought home a pillow case full of sugary treats—but your parents tell you that you can’t eat them. Most children will feel resentful and deprived, and they will probably end up sneaking candy when you’re not looking.

Let your kids enjoy Halloween and teach them moderation. Instead of outlawing sweets, have your children pick a set number of treats, and put the rest out of sight.

Establish a Teeth Brushing Routine

No matter what day it is, your children should have an established dental hygiene schedule. (Always have your children floss and brush after eating sweets.) Until the age of eight, be sure that you help your child through the teeth cleaning process.

You can help your child see how well he or she has been brushing by using a disclosing tablet or solution. These tablets, which are available for purchase both online and at your local drugstore, reveal bad brushing habits by temporarily staining the plaque on your child’s teeth.

Make Oral Hygiene Fun

Kids are more inclined to practice good oral hygiene habits when they are allowed to choose their toothpaste and toothbrushes. Make Halloween even more special by taking the time to let your child pick out a new toothbrush.

Halloween Event

Stop by and see us at the Flint RiverQuarium’s 4th Annual Tricks & Treats celebration where we will pass out sugar-free candy, toothbrushes, and toothpastes to trick-or-treaters. Bring your children in their spookiest costumes for info on the importance of good dental hygiene, and to enjoy some sugar-free treats on us!

For more information about your child’s oral health and our upcoming events, contact a Vital Smiles Georgia office near you. We have convenient locations in Albany and Norcross.

At Vital Smiles Georgia, we understand that it can be difficult to convince your children that dental hygiene is important for their health. That is why we offer daycare presentations to educate children and parents about the importance of beginning good dental health habits at an early age.

Our dental hygiene presentations are fun for the whole family. We introduce the children to Marley, a friendly dinosaur. The children can dress up as the dentist with their own mask and gloves, and take turns brushing Marley’s teeth. We also demonstrate how other dental tools are used so children will not be afraid when they see them.

We offer these presentations because we are committed to our community and to ensuring that children receive the quality dental care that they need.  Additionally, we want to familiarize children with the dentist and get them comfortable with what we do in a fun and kid-friendly way.

Call our Albany office at 229-432-9555 for more information about the educational events we offeriene. We are here to help keep your children smiling, so contact us today!
